Japan's lightning conquests in 1941-42 left the Imperial Army and Navy with vast areas in Southeast Asia and the South Pacific to police and defend. Lacking the manpower to provide internal security, Japan raised very large numbers of local troops, either by direct enlistment or through "puppet" regimes. This book, illustrated with rare wartime photos and new color uniform plates, describes the major military and paramilitary forces raised in this way, including the Japanese-allied Chinese and Thai armies, and the Indian National Army largely recruited from prisoners-of-war captured in Malaya.
