"This paper deals with two related concepts, the division slice and the division force. Although one succeeded the other, in clarity as well as time, they have a common subject matter. Both seek to establish a means of analyzing the structure of armies by concentrating on the relation between battel strength and the effort that goes into producing it. Each offers a technique for assessing the way in which an army distributes its manpower into the formations that fight and the other formations that enable them to do so. And in each, the division is taken as the main bearer of battle power and the standard by which to account for the rest of the army. But the differences between them are as important as the similarities, and in the final section of this study, the attributes that distinguish them will be a major theme." -- Introduction.
