This report presents statistical data on U.S. military casualties, combat related individual military decorations awarded, and numbers of U.S. military personnel involved in all U.S. military actions during and since the Vietnam War (the latter conflict itself excluded in which U.S. forces engaged, or were engaged by, an opposing armed force and sustained casualties. The Congressional Research Service is frequently queried about these operations. The Vietnam War itself is excluded because information on causalities and numbers serving, and some decorations, is readily available from other sources (as is information on the Korean War and both World Wars. Data on pre-Vietnam era military operations smaller in scope than the Korean and Vietnam Wars is fragmentary at best. Terrorist incidents are generally not included.
