"Attachment of the CC B to the V Corps in the first place was the purpose of supporting the V Corps ROER Dams offensive beginning 13 December. On 8 December the V Corps Letter of Instruction stated that a CC of teh 9th AD would be attached, and the CC B was later attached effective the 12th. Perhaps it was selected because of availability and need for battle experience. The 9th AD became operational on 20 October in the ARDENNES area, but elements had received battle indoctrination only through attachment to line divisions. Then, on 10 December the 9th was assigned a narrow divisional sector, and the 60th Armored Infantry Battalion of CC A was assigned to man it. Thus, the CC R continued in reserve, and CC B was a likely candidate for an opportunity to engage in action. Attached to the V Corps' 2d Division, the CC B moved into the 2d's reserve, into an assembly area, on the 13th, and remained there until reversion to the VIII Corps on the 16th." -- From Summary, page 1.
