"Consumption and attrition rates attendant to the operations of German Army Group Center (22 June-31 December 1941)" was prepared in the Office of the Chief of Military History at the request of the Department of the Army General Staff. The authors, former German generals, Lt. Gen. Rudolf Hoffman and Brig. Gen. Alfred Toppe, are among the best qualified living individuals to write this study. General Hofmann was successively Operations Officer of the XIII Corps and Chief of Staff of the Ninth Army at the time the operations described took place, and General Toppe was Cheif of Supply and Administration for Army Group North during this same period. Both authors have, as full-time employees of Historical Division, USAREUR, devoted considerable time during the past year in studying the operation and logistics of Army Group Center." -- Foreword
