The emergence of biofuel technologies began before World War II, as energy independence was becoming increasingly important in the days before cheap and plentiful crude. Until market forces dictated a reliance on crude oil supplies, biofuels were being incorporated into emerging sector markets. Henry Ford's 1908 Model T was the original flex-fuel car, running on both ethanol and gasoline. This panel discussion covers the types of fuels that can be created using a renewable resource as the base, the need for cost containment if airlines are to remain in operation, the competing objectives within the biofuel industry, the importance of yield in sustaining our global economey, and the relative merits of corn and sugar cane ethanol production.--Conference web page.
