This study was undertaken to determine a scheduling pattern which would meet the desires of workers and demands of jobs within the administrative section of the Department of Dietetics, University of Kansas Medical Center, Kansas City, Kansas. The methods of research included: (1) an analysis of the present scheduling method; (2) a study of employee absenteeism and turnover; (3) interviews with various hospital dietitians and administrative personnel; and (4) a survey of employee scheduling preferences through use of the questionnaire technique. The major findings of this study were (1) the present scheduling method did not meet with the expressed preferences of the majority of employees; (2) absenteeism on Saturday was significantly higher than for other days and must be controlled; (3) the turnover rate was excessive and should be decreased to develop a flexible workforce; (4) a rotating schedule with changing days off would satisfy the schedule desires of a majority of employees. Recommendations were made to affect the implementation of schedules by rotating employees from position to position within the schedule and incorporating the changing day-off concept. Recommendations were also made concerning: (1) development of in-service training programs; (2) increase of supervisor – employee rapport; and (3) instructions for recommended work group schedules.
