This study analyzes animal euthanasia techniques in a large city. Currently animal rights activists are closely examining euthanasia methods, and there had been much public criticism of the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District Division of Animal Control in San Antonio, Texas. The author subjectively evaluated the euthanasia of 79 dogs he witnessed, and examined the records for over 1000, comparing his observations to euthanasia standards established by the American Humane Association’s Operational Guide. The author found that carbon monoxide euthanasia utilizing exhaust from a gasoline engine can be a safe, effective, and humane method of euthanasia. He believes that criticism of the process is unavoidable due to the inherently undesirable nature of animal euthanasia.
