This report covers intralaboratory and interlaboratory aspects of a complete veterinary food testing laboratory quality assurance program for Health Services Command (HSC). Each CONUS HSC veterinary food testing laboratory was surveyed to determine the status of existing intralaboratory quality assurance programs. Considerable variance exists between laboratories in methods employed for the evaluation of precision of analytical results, the evaluation of accuracy of analytical results, the analysis of intralaboratory quality assurance data, and the application and interpretation of results obtained by statistical analysis of intralaboratory quality assurance data. On the basis of a content analysis of existing intralaboratory quality assurance programs and the results obtained from the subjective evaluation of basic confidence levels, a central quality assurance program is proposed which complements existing intralaboratory programs. The basic central quality assurance program is outlined in the attached chart.
