During the first three months of Operation Desert Shield, the United States Transportation Command moved more men, equipment and supplies further and faster than ever before in history. Desert Shield was the first test of the young logistics combined command. This case study focuses on the successful strategic sealift provided by the Military Sealift Command during Phase I of Desert Shield. As a completed evolution, Phase I provides an excellent basis for the case study of strategic sealift. This case study examines the accomplishments of strategic sealift, critiques the problems encountered, and envisions the implication of the results on the future of strategic sealift.
