This study provides a glimpse of that future, a glimpse focused on the patterns, travails, and successes of U.S. military logistics prior to and during the combat phase of the conflict. Although it pulls from the Department of Defense's (DoD) various "lessons learned" efforts, we do not try to duplicate those important undertakings. "Lessons learned" focus on improving what exists. This study is part of an effort that goes beyond improving the logistics operations, toward transforming them. As such, we have focused on evidence of logistics differences in kind, rather than degree, and looked for indications of new logistics operational concepts. More specifically, we sifted what happened for evidence that relates to a particular transforming concept-the sense and respond logistics capability (SRLC)-and to better understand how, where, and why SRLC is taking root-or why it is not.
