This handbook provides a detailed look at night vision and night aiming devices common to light infantry and associated units. As indicated in the opening chapter, βowning the nightγ offers irresistible benefits to units equipped to do so. The technology and density of equipment is readily available to light infantry units, and history has shown that units that take advantage of night operations dominate lesser-equipped foes. Not all soldiers or units take full advantage of their organic night vision capabilities. The reason for this negative trend lies largely in the areas of training and leadership. Many soldiers do not really understand how the systems work, and they mistakenly believe that their own vision is superior under most light conditions. Even those soldiers who enthusiastically accept night vision devices may not zero the night aiming device, lessening its effectiveness. Leaders must educate their soldiers on the systems, and then train their units until night vision operations become second nature.
