From Foreword: As the nature of the strategic balance between East and West has altered, and the relationship of the Western powers to the new countries of Asia, the Middle East and Africa has developed, strategic mobility has become an increasingly important aspect of Western policy. This is especially true of Britain and the United States. This study represents an attempt to draw together a number of threads, political, geographic, and technological, so that the student of war and politics may assess for himself the potentialities and the limitations of mobile forces and operations. This is not a subject to which any general theories or principles of war can be rigidly applied. If I have imposed a great many detailed considerations on the reader, it is because the feasibility of reinforcing deterrence by mobility can only be assessed by a close study of topography, political developments, technological trends and military doctrines.
