Plutarch's lives : the Dryden Translation. Plutarch (A.D. 46-120). Plutarch was born at Chaeronea in Boeotia, but spent many years both in Athens and in Rome. There he acquired his vast knowledge of the literature and history of his times. His biographies have served as models for all who came after him. After all these centuries, they retain their full vigor and fascination; the biogragher of today could scarcely approach the same subjects in a more modern manner. The present translation was made by a number of scholars, among whom Dryden was the most illustrious, and was published at the end of seventeenth century. In 1864, Arthur Hugh Clough revised the work from beginning to end; the Modern Library reader is thus assured of the most modern and accurate Plutarch in existance. -- jacket flap.
