In the Line of Duty: Army Art, 1965û2014, presents art from the Vietnam War through the late twentieth to early twenty-first century to more recent operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. It depicts the U.S. Army in all its aspects. The soldier-artists represented here are from the Regular Army, Army Reserves, and National Guard. They continue a rich tradition of documenting the lives of American soldiers at war, in training, and in a variety of humanitarian missions. Artists' statements enhance some of the paintings and describe the thoughts and feelings associated with the artists' mission. The works included are a small sampling of the approximately sixteen thousand pieces of art that constitute the Army Art Collection at the U.S. Army Center of Military History. This volume supplements the Army's previously published art books, Portrait of an Army and Soldiers Serving the Nation, and its electronic publications, Army Artists Look at the War on Terrorism, 2001 to the Present, and Art of the American Soldier: Documenting Military History Through Artists' Eyes and in Their Own Words.
