The United Provinces of the Rio Plata (present-day Argentina), along with other Spanish colonies in South American were engaged in a war for independence. The Spaniards had put down revolutionary movements from Mexico down to Peru and Chile had also fallen to the Spaniards. General San Martin's plan was to assume the offensive against the Spanish army and advance on Lima to destroy his military forces and his power in South America. Discusses the plan in further detail.
