The Status of Forces Agreement (SOF), a multilateral treaty among the nations of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), was ratified by the President of the United States on 24 July 1953. Similar agreements have been made with several non-NATO countries, including Japan. Article VII of SOF provides for criminal jurisdiction over military personnel of the armed forces of the sending state when they are charged with crimes allegedly committed within the territory of the receiving state.
