"This volume also includes works on the Philippine-American War (1899- 1902) since it was a consequence of Dewey's victory at Manila. The word 'war' might be more appropriate than 'insurrection,' since an insurrection is a revolt against an already established authority, and during the Philippine-American War Filipino troops were resisting the United States' attempt to impose its authority over the archipelago... This is a selective bibliography, including the majority3of scholarly works on the Spanish-American and Philippine-American Wars written in English between 1898 and 1986. Every attempt has been made to include the widest possible variety of interpretations of events and policies. Occasionally articles appearing in popular periodicals are included to fill a void found in the body of scholarly writing. Archival materials are not included, but War and Navy Department Reports, Congressional investigations, and reports to the President are listed... In addition to the traditional works of history, popular fiction and music are included in this bibliography, for they offer considerable insight into the attitudes and emotions surrounding the events of the period" --
