This Paper traces the history of the inter-communal conflict and catalogues the efforts of the UN to seek resolution. It delineates the political forces on the island and their attitudes towards the national issue, and considers the economic gulf which has grown up between the two communities and its implications for reunification. Finally, the Paper surveys the effects the Cyprus impasse has had on the nexus of relations between Greece, Turkey, NATO, the US, the UK, the Soviet Union and the European Community. It offers no prescriptions for settlement but does seek to elucidate some of the sensitivities involved in the hope that by this means it might help promote understanding and contribute to resolution of the conflict.
