This 18-hour subcourse is designed to build on the student's analytic and problemsolving skills through an examination of the major communist competitors' activities, specifically in Northeast Asia. It allows the student to use the strategic analysis model introduced in P512 to conduct US defense planning related to a specific regional assessment and case study. It begins with an introduction to the national objectives and interests of the US, Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) and the People's Republic of China (PRC). The significance of the bilateral relationship of the USSR and PRC and its impact on US national security is assessed. The course then presents a case study of conflict in Northeast Asia and how this affects US security interests, commitments and defense planning. Course contents: Lesson 1, US interests and objectives in Northeast Asia; Lesson 2, Soviet Union: policies, posture, and issues; Lesson 3, People's Republic of China: policies, posture, and issues; Lesson 4, Sino- Soviet conflict; Lesson 5, North Korea, South Korea, and Japan: policies, postures, and issues; and Lesson 6, Northeast Asia case study.
