This 20-hour subcourse introduces the student to Soviet military forces, emphasizing Soviet army organization and tactics. A review of the historical development of Soviet military philosophy provides a basis for analyzing current equipment, organization, tactical doctrine, and support functions. Units from battalion through front will be studied, with the emphasis on division operations. Offensive and defensive tactics, including nuclear and chemical operations, will be portrayed in a series of practical exercises using an European scenario. A net assessment of current US and Soviet force structure is included.
