This individual development elective focuses on light infantry division operations. It builds on the material presented in P315 and P316 and requires the student to apply AirLand Battle doctrine and sound tactical judgment in the employment of light infantry divisions in a variety of situations. The course considers both contingency missions and employment of light infantry in Europe. Students will be required to prepare papers and present briefings describing historical examples of the employment of light infantry division-sized forces that detail the reasons for the success or failure of the particular operations. On completion, students will have a better understanding of the capabilities and limitations of light infantry divisions, current concepts for employment of these divisions on contingency missions, and their utility in Europe. Students will also have a historical perspective of the principles governing the successful employment of light infantry forces. Course contents: Meeting 1, Introduction to light infantry and course overview; Meeting 2, Falkland Islands campaign; Meeting 3, Chindit campaign; Meeting 4, Light infantry in Korea; Meetings 5 & 6, Deployment planning; Meeting 7, Employment planning (lodgment phase); Meeting 8, Employment planning (expansion phase); Meeting 9, Light infantry division employment in NATO (MOUT); and Meeting 10, Light infantry division employment in NATO (offense).
