This course presents the evolution of joint planning and operations and the current planning concepts for combat deployment, employment, and support of a joint force from the perspective of the Unified Commander. Within the framework of the Joint Planning Process, the student applies the Joint Operation Planning System to develop force, support and transportation requirements for a possible contingency operation and then using crises action procedures adapts this plan for deployment of forces. Course contents include: Lesson 1, introduction to the joint planning process; Lesson 2, contingency scenario - INDCOM (US Indian Ocean Command); Lesson 3, concept development; Lesson 4, plan development; Lesson 5, plan review and supporting plans; Lesson 6, crisis action phase 1; Lesson 7, crisis action phases I and III - assessment, course of action development; Lesson 8, crisis action phases IV and V - decision, execution planning; and Lessson 9, crisis action phase VI - execution. Other materials include: INDCOM port data; area studies and intelligence apprisals for Oman and Yemen, and maps of USINDCOM and Oman. Readings included: "Joint Deployment Planning", by LTC C. G.
