This subcourse is designed to build on the student's analytical and problem solving skills through an examination of the major communist competitor's activities, specifically in Northeast Asia. The subcourse allows the student to utilize the strategic analysis model introduced in P512 to conduct US defense planning relating to specific regional assessment and case study. P513 begins with an introduction to the national objectives and interests of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) and the People's Republic of China (PRC). The significance of their bilateral relationship and its impact on US national security interests, commitments, and associated US defense planning considerations in Northeast Asia. Special attention is paid to US interests, commitments, and defense obligations in Korea as well as in the other key national actors in the region.
