This subcourse, consisting of seven lessons and an examination, is designed to provide the basic conceptual and analytic skills necessary for assignments involving the development of the national security policy and military policy. It provides the link between the military services and their function as a part of the defensive establishment in national- and international-level policy-making. This subcourse will also review the current defense policy of the United States, the development of US nuclear strategy, and the Soviet Union. A European assessment is conducted with emphasis on US goals and interests in western Europe, threats to those goals and interests, US military planning considerations, and problems in the Atlantic Alliance.
