This individual development course is a study of seapower and its influence on history from ancient times to the present. It includes analyses of Mediterranean naval history and the fall of Rome; the Age of Discovery; and Western European dominance of naval strategy, including the Spanish Armada and the battles of the Napoleonic wars. It also includes 19th- and 20th-century maritime history, centering on development of the US Navy and roles of key civilian and military personalities. A brief examination of naval strategy since World War II is presented. The final meeting discusses Soviet naval developments.
