This individual development course is a study of seapower and its influence on history from ancient times to the present. It includes analyses of Mediterranean naval history and the fall of Rome; the Age of Discovery; and Western European dominance of naval strategy, including the Spanish Armada and the battles of the Napoleonic wars. It also includes 19th- and 20th-century maritime history, centering on development of the US Navy and roles of key civilian and military personalities. A brief examination of naval strategy since World War II is presented. The final meeting discusses Soviet naval developments. Instructional material includes "History, Dust Heap or Cornerstone?", by CPT S. W. Roskill, D.S.C., Royal Navy (Retired). Chronologies and a bibliography are also included.
