This 54-hour subcourse covers the doctrinal fundamentals, using an European scenario, as applied to the combined arms team's operations (armored/mechanized division). It teaches, through lectures, demonstrations, and practical exercises, how to analyze a corps operation plan (OPLAN) to identify a division's essential tasks; analyze avenues of approach; template the enemy's defending force; develop and analyze courses of action; recommend and select a course of action; task organize a division, to include corps assets; write an operation order (OPORD); and prepare an operation overlay. Many of these same items are treated during student led discussions of the historical analyses of the Battle of Schmidt.
