Haiti, 1743, the little Toussaint Louverture and his family were brought to Saint-Domingue from Africa in chains. But early on, Toussaint demonstrated intelligence and leadership qualities, he learned to read and write, and he soon became astute in business dealings, he managed to earn his freedom and even become a free man and a Jacobin (a member of the French Revolution) by his late twenties.
