A career conventional officer with extensive post-9/11 experience working with the special operations community, Major James Bogart served as the logistics officer (S4) for 3rd Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group from July 2002 through July 2003, as the group S4 for 3rd Special Forces Group from July 2003 through June 2004, and then as the Bravo Company commander in the 528th Special Operations Support Battalion from July 2004 through June 2005. Assigned to 10th Special Forces Group during the major combat phase of Operation Iraqi Freedom, Bogart's battalion operated in the north of Iraq with the Peshmerga "in supporting them and conducting operations for unconventional warfare." For his part, he was responsible for equipping and developing logistics plans for the region and then, once in country, for Task Force Viking base construction, sustainment, contracting and security, and for resupplying the operational detachment alphas with ammunition and fuel primarily. Discussing some significant problems with shortages, especially in the realm of ammunition, Bogart explains that "the problem was that there wasn't any central receiving or accountability for those supplies that came in, which turned into almost like a free-for-all. Sometimes when I was trying to track down ammunition, I would find our pallet was already empty…. The priority of supplies, in my observation again, was misplaced. There was plenty of bottled water and food, but in our estimation we needed more ammunition and repair parts, and that seemed to be - and it's not just in special operations - a problem with everyone." Upon redeployment from Iraq in May 2003, Bogart was promoted to major, took over as the 3rd Group S4 and later deployed in September 2003 to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. In country a year, he served as the Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force J4 and was responsible for all logistics to support coalition and US special operations forces. Completing his group S4 assignment, Bogart took command of a special operations forward support company and deployed again to Afghanistan supporting special ops forces. He performed the full range of company commander duties and also those as task force support operations officer.
