In February 1962 the 1st Armored Division was reactivated at Fort Hood, Texas, as the Army's first ROAD (Reorganization Objectives, Army Divisions) division. COL John C. Hughes, commander of 1st Armored Division's aviation battalion, the 501st, describes a year of efforts toward meeting ROAD objectives. Areas discussed are organization and training, aircraft inventory, readiness of pilots, intelligence, logistics, aircraft maintenance, safety, and helicopter armament. Lessons learned by the 501st are included.
