The initial year of the World War saw the creation of the St Mihiel Salient. This great wedge embracing l50 square miles of French territory, with a contact edge extending for 40 miles, was a constant menace to the French armies and a strong obstacle to an allied advance upon the German vital area of Metz-Briey-Longuyon.
