Missions: As the Army component of USSOUTHCOM (the largest of USSOUTHCOM's components), the 193d Infantry Brigade (Panama) was the executive agent for the ground defense of the Panama Canal and the canal area. The Commander of the 193d Infantry Brigade (Panama) executed the Army component functions of USSOUTHCOM. The missions assigned to the Brigade were: To defend the Panama Canal. -- To increase readiness of allied Latin American armies. -- To train Forces Command battalions to operate in a jungle environment. -- To provide training support for partnership activities. -- To support USSOUTHCOM contingency missions.
