Based in Jacobabad, Pakistan during the course of his January to May 2002 deployment in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, Major Brian Beckno - in this first of two interviews focusing on his Global War on Terrorism deployments - discusses his command of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 187th Infantry, part of 3rd Brigade, 101st Airborne Division. He talks about the support elements of his company provided Operation Anaconda; the challenges he faced logistically and working with the Air Force; the problems he encountered with communications equipment at the small-unit level; as well as his experiences at the Spanish airbase that he described as being "marooned in Morón."
