The 1st Antiaircraft Artillery Guided Missile Battalion was organized in October 1945 at Fort Bliss, Texas by the Commanding Officer AAATC at the direction of the Commanding General, AGF. The majority of the enlisted personnel was mainly obtained from AAA units then stationed at Fort Bliss. The mission of the Battalion as assigned by ACF is: to assist Army Service Forces (Ordnance Department) in the work being conducted on guided missile projects of interest to Army Ground Forces; to assist the Navy Department (Bu Ord) in conduct of test firings of guided missiles of interest to Army Ground Forces; to assist the Ordnance Department in the work being done on "Little David" at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland (this mission is assigned in view of the possibility of using a large caliber gun to launch guided missiles); and to develop and evolve doctrine for tactical employment of ground launched guided missiles.
