From the 1986 annual historical review's Chapter I, Overview (page 2): In 1986, the army recognized an increasing element in the responsibilities of AMC's research and development centers by ordering their names changed. On 19 March 1986, ARDC became the United States Army Armament Research, Development and Engineering Center (ARDEC). Since this changed only the name, not the history or the organization, this study will refer to ARDEC for all FY1986 activities.
