From the 2005-2007 supplement: Executive Summary: This report covers the activities of U.S. Joint Forces Command during the tenure of General Lance L. Smith as commander, from November 2005 to November 2007. During this time Joint Forces Command maintained a dual focus of developing capabilities to assist the future joint force, while simultaneously supporting the ongoing operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. Although both efforts continued, the emphasis shifted somewhat towards support to the current fight under General Smith's guidance. Traditionally, JFCOM missions had four pillars, which were force provision, integration, training, and concept development and experimentation. Over time these missions expanded into new areas. -- From Introduction. Background: United States Joint Forces Command traces its origins to U.S. Atlantic Command, making it one of the nation's oldest unified commands. Atlantic Command (then called LANTCOM) began on December 1, 1947.
