In this June 2013 interview, LTC David Downing, US Army, V Corps, discusses his deployment to Afghanistan as the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) Joint Commands (IJC) liaison officer (LNO) to ISAF in 2012 through 2013 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF). LTC Downing talks about the staffing of V Corps and the pre-deployment training. He describes working with NATO partners and talks about some challenges he faced getting information. He discusses his daily grind and shares concerns over civilian casualties and insider threats. LTC Downing closes his interview by stating, ". . . if we're going to do Coalition warfare and the need is for an LNO between the three-star and four-star headquarters regardless of rank, I think it is advantageous to find someone who has some joint experience and then the icing on the cake is someone who has had some international experience. Preferably in the region that you are fighting in."
