In this June 2013 interview, COL Matthew Mattner, US Army,V Corps, discusses his deployment to Afghanistan as the Deputy Chief of Staff of V Corps and Director of Staff for the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) Joint Command (IJC) in 2012 through 2013 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF). COL Mattner talks the development of the V Corps team and the pre-deployment training. He describes LTG [ James] Terry's command style and his intent in Afghanistan. COL Mattner discusses his roles and responsibilities and the staffing of his office with US and international officers. He then discusses the handoff to the incoming III Corps. COL Mattner closes his interview by stating, "I think one of the big accomplishments was moving knowledge management out from under the DCOS for intelligence in the information dominance center into a separate COS directed entity. By doing that and setting the knowledge management plan into place, we were able to make some improvements in -- what affected us -- was in archiving. With multiple systems for sharing information, the shared drives, the portal and the NATO document handling system it was easy to lose documents or not be able to find them for archiving purposes."
