The Otter is unique among fixed-wing aircraft in the Army inventory because of its short takeoff and landing capabilities, originally having been designed for the dirt airstrips in the remote regions of Canada. It flies slowly, but has the endurance to spend long hours in the air, and it requires relatively little ground maintanance time and money to keep it airborne.
